Mary Cassatt, Modern Woman
Published in Paperback by Harry N Abrams (December, 1999)
Authors: Mary Cassatt, Judith A. Barter, Erica E. Hirshler, Art Institute of Chicago, and George T. Shackelford
Average review score:

beautifully presented, somewhat interesting
A collection of interesting essays (and representations of her works) on the artist and her life give the reader good, broad and varied sense about who Mary Cassatt was and how important she was in helping America to discover impressionism. MC is an artist that merits to be better recognized and this book serves a good purpose. - Yet for people that have already studied MC and want to learn more on detailed aspects of her art, this book will probably not be sufficient - Griselda Pollock has written a book i found very useful called 'mary cassatt painter of modern women' which has some well-founded arguments about her works and intentions and is very interesting and more original than this collection of well presented and nevertheless good essays.

Medical Transcription: Fundamentals and Practice (2nd Edition)
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall (07 September, 1999)
Author: Health Professions Institute
Average review score:

Great book but missing one very important thing?!?!?!?
This is a great learning tool for the beginning transcriptionist. It is easy to read and flows well. I am very excited about the learning opportunity it provides. There is only one very large problem. You need the CD-ROM that should come with the book. This version does not include the CR-ROM. The ISBN # for the same book with the CD included is 0 13 018735 6 and you will have to special order it from Amazon. If you don't you will have to order the CD seperately. That is if you can find it (I tried with no luck) and it is not cheap. The book with the CD included is much more cost effective. I hope this information helps.

The World to Come...?
This book is an indepth look at the future of the World System, specifically the interaction between NGOs (non-governmental organizations) and the UN (United Nations). The book is divided into several sections including Theoretical Framework, NGOs in Action, Cross Cutting Themes and Processes and a Conclusion. Within each section, there are essays by various academicians. Included in the book is an interesting Forward by Boutros Boutros Ghali. This book provides an extensive look at the subject and is a must-buy for scholars and the very interested....otherwise-dont waste your money.

Office Building Management
Published in Paperback by Inst of Real Estate Management (July, 2002)
Author: Institute of Real Estate Management
Average review score:

Dry and Poorly Written
This book is a detail oriented, poorly written guide to office building management. Having purchased the book in order to become aquainted with the field of office buidling management I was very disappointed. This title went into far to deatiled analysis of tax law, liability insurance, mundane details of lease writing, and tenant selection. For anyone that does not already have a deep understanding of office building management I would defintely recommend steering clear of this particular title.

Opportunities Denied, Opportunities Diminished: Racial Discrimination in Hiring (Urban Institute Report 91-9)
Published in Hardcover by Urban Institute Press (01 November, 1991)
Authors: Margery Austin Turner, Michael Fix, and Raymond J. Struyk
Average review score:

Dry facts, but useful
Statistics, statistics, statistics. For those who believe that racial discrimination does not exist or who seem to think that affirmative action serves as a solid counterweight should read it. Useful in arguments against conservatives who claim racism is dead (see D'Souza,Dinesh). A less dry source with the same information was a Primetime Live special called "True Colors". If you can track it down, watch it. You won't regret it.

Persepolis Fortification Tablets (Oriental Institute Pubns, No 92)
Published in Hardcover by University of Chicago Press (January, 1969)
Authors: Richard T. Hallock and Richard Halcock
Average review score:

Your Visitors Will Be Impressed
This is the kind of non-readable but impressive looking book which I leave on the coffee table for strangers to comment on, right under the Lloyd Llewelyn autographed treasury. The tablets of Persepolis are of course the original cache of cuneiform writing, comparable to (and of course older than) the oracle turtle bones of China.

You'll not be able to read them but they're nice to look at and forty bucks is cheaper than a trip to the University of Chicago museum on 57th Street where these are housed.

Practical Chinese Reader: Book 1 (Set of 7 Cassettes)
Published in Audio Cassette by Cheng & Tsui (August, 2002)
Author: Beijing Language Institute
Average review score:

PRC Series
Basically, all that you really need to know is that the grammar in this book is excellent. It is simple and the exercises are useful. The problem is that the vocabulary is somewhat random and out of date. It was written in 1979 and is loaded with communist vocabulary and tapics that have fallen out of use. Recommended with some sort of companion for vocabulary.

A Practical Guide to Archaeological Photography (Archaeological Research Tools, Vol 6)
Published in Paperback by Univ of California LA Inst of (October, 1995)
Authors: Howell Carol L., Warren Blanc, Los Angeles Institute of Archaeology University of California, and Carol L. Howell
Average review score:

Thorough, if dated, introduction to photography in the field
I bought this book prior to going on my first professional photographic gig at the site of Isthmia, Greece. The book is extremely helpful for the novice with a great introduction to light and depth of field. Although featuring examples from the author's experience with American excavations, the methodology provided in the book is universal -- props, accessories, and lighting tricks. One of the most useful tools the book provides is a series of crib-sheets that you can cut out and paste on card stock that will fit in your camera bag. These sheets cover everything from reminders for object photography to how to take care of your lenses. My only real gripe with the book is that it is extremely biased and opinionated, which is fine (I guess) if the intended audience was not at the novice level. Comments like "stay away from motorized film advances -- they are loud and are prone to breaking," smack of old-school elitism and are no longer really valid. This book gives some exceptional information on photographing every aspect of an excavation, but like reading stratigraphy, to really glean the best data, you have to be a careful reader with some experience in photography.
